| What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts that is based on the premise that optimal health is based, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system. 'Chiropractic' comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos, meaning effective treatment by hand. It stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begin with the body having difficulty adapting to it's environment. It looks to address conditions and diseases not by the use of chemicals, but by locating and adjusting the muscoskeletal area of the body that is functioning improperly.
What conditions benefit from chiropractic care?
Although chiropractic is used most frequently to relieve low back pain, studies have proven that it is found to be effective for a variety of conditions such as migraine headaches, shoulder pain, carpel tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and infantile colic.
Does chiropractic care hurt?
Under normal conditions, adjustments don't cause any pain. The patient may incur a small amount of discomfort during the adjustment but it is assured that the discomfort will only last for a few seconds.
Are adjustments safe?
Chiropractic adjustments are very safe. The risk factor is in estimate to be in excess of five million to one.
What type of training and education do the doctors need?
Chiropractors receive an education very similar to other doctors. Emphasis is based on neuromuscular diagnosis and treatment. Preparation for the practice of chiropractic is taught in three basic categories; basic training in the biological and health sciences, specialized training of chiropractic discipline, and extensive clinical training.
Studies that state what chiropractic is effective for:
Many studies have documented the effectiveness of chiropractic in relieving pain. More recent studies have shown chiropractic care to be effective in treating infantile colic as well as migraine headaches.
What can I expect on my first visit?
The first thing we will do is ask you about your health complaints. The doctor will also ask you about your family history and any other care you may have had. After a consultation, the doctor will may reccommend a physical examination. Examination procedures usually include spinal temperature, muscle balance, range of motion and x-rays with state of the art equiptment. Other diagnostic procedures or referrals to other health care practicioners may be reccommended if necessary.
After your first visit, the doctor takes time to inform you on your current health state and what steps are needed to bring you to a healthier state and keep you that way. Before any treatment is begun, the doctor will thoroughly explain the procedure.
